The paper chronicles the economic successes and upheavals that eventually crushed the aspirations of Colonial Queensland’s Three Trading Banks. It traces the history of the three Queensland based, deposit-taking and note-issuing, trading banks that were established in the 1870s and 1880s; namely the Queensland National Bank Limited, Royal Bank of Queensland Limited and Bank of North Queensland Limited. Edward Gustavus Campbell Barton (1857-1942) is hardly a household name in Queensland, however as a pioneer of electricity supply his contribution to the development and modernisation of the state is unquestionable.
